Matisse

1869-1954

Henri Matisse (December 31, 1869 - November 3, 1954) was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker known for his vibrant color palette and innovative use of form. Notable works include "The Dance," "Woman with a Hat," and "The Snail." Matisse was a leading figure in the Fauvist movement, characterized by bold, non-naturalistic colors and a focus on emotional expression. He contributed significantly to modern art by challenging traditional artistic conventions and exploring the relationship between color and form. Later in life, after health issues restricted his ability to paint, he created stunning artworks using cut paper shapes, a technique he referred to as "drawing with scissors."
