About The Night Watch
The Night Watch (1642) by Rembrandt van Rijn, alternatively titled Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq, is one of the most famous Dutch Golden Age paintings. It depicts a group of Kloveniers, a civic guard, preparing to defend Amsterdam from attack. A total of 34 characters appear in the painting, and Rembrandt's innovative approach to group portraiture would influence many future artists. The dramatic use of light and shadow was significant to Baroque art as well as reflective of emerging Dutch civic pride and the role of citizen militias in 17th-century Amsterdam. The Night Watch has weathered several attacks of its own: in 1715, it was cut down in order to fit a new room; during WWII it was rolled up and hidden; it has been knifed twice, in 1911 and 1975; and an escaped psychiatric patient sprayed it with acid in 1990. Yet it endures, thanks to the generations of guards (restorers and professional conservators) who have overseen its welfare.
