About Woman Beside the Water
La Japonaise: Woman Beside the Water (1905) by Henri Matisse was created in Collioure, a small Mediterranean fishing port near the border with Spain. Matisse began to explore what he later described as "construction by means of color" in his paintings while in Collioure. It depicts a woman in a kimono reading a book next to the water, created only with brushstrokes of color against a white canvas background and no definitive shapes or outlines. The painting and others like it were exhibited in the Paris Salon, where critics called Matisse and his fellow painters "les fauves" (wild beasts), which led to the art movement's name: Fauvism.
