1632-1675
Johannes Vermeer also known as Jan Vermeer (October 31, 1632 - December 15, 1675) was a Dutch Baroque painter renowned for his intimate domestic scenes and masterful use of light. Notable works include "Girl with a Pearl Earring," "The Geographer," and "View of Delft." Vermeer's artistic style is characterized by his meticulous attention to detail, vibrant color palette, and the innovative use of optical effects. He used a camera obscura, an early optical device, to help achieve the remarkable perspective and light effects in his paintings, allowing him to create a sense of realism that was ahead of his time. During his lifetime, he was a moderately successful genre painter, recognized in Delft and The Hague. He produced relatively few paintings, primarily earning his living as an art dealer, with only 34 paintings attributed to him.
