About Adoration of the Magi
The Adoration of the Magi (1475) by Hieronymus Bosch is an unusual depiction of a popular religious theme, the three magi bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the Virgin Mary and Christ Child (Matthew 2:11). It is staged in the contemporary ruins of a medieval castle, and contrasts the extraordinary wealth of the magi with poor peasants and shepherds. Various onlookers, including an ox and a dog, observe the scene underneath a curtain held aloft by angels. Perspective is used to display a vast background where ordinary people pursue everyday activities. Also notable Balthasar is differentiated from his companions, Melchior and Caspar, as an African king, elaborately attired, with a crowned, feathered fez, and gold curved sword.
