About At Eternity's Gate
At Eternity's Gate, or Sorrowing Old Man (1890) by Vincent van Gogh depicts an old man with his elbows on his knees, head in his hands, sitting in a chair by a fireplace. Based on an earlier lithograph from 1882, it was a subject he returned to many times over the years. This final version was painted in Saint-Rémy de Provence while recovering from a severe relapse in his health. There is no modern consensus on his condition, suggestions include epilepsy or bipolar disorder, possibly exacerbated by excessive absinthe drinking. It was painted two months before his death from a self-inflicted gun shot wound. Van Gogh's final years and struggles with his health are dramatized in Julian Schnabel's 2018 biographical film At Eternity's Gate starring Willem Dafoe.
