About Self-Portrait (Bandaged Ear)
Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear (1889) by Vincent van Gogh is a self-portrait in a blue cap with black fur, a green overcoat, with a bandage covering his ear. The portrait makes it appear his right ear is bandaged, as he used a mirror to paint it. Behind him is an open window, a canvas on an easel, and a Japanese woodblock print of "Geishas in a Landscape" by Satō Torakiyo from the 1870s. Van Gogh had moved to Arles to establish a community of supportive artists, renting four rooms in The Yellow House, and inviting Paul Gauguin. On evening of December 23, 1888, Gauguin threatened to leave and van Gogh accosted him with a razor, later that night slicing off his own left ear. The incident and outfit are featured in Julian Schnabel's 2018 biographical drama At Eternity's Gate starring Willem Dafoe.
