Woman in front of the Setting Sun (1818, Frau vor der untergehenden Sonne) by Casper David Friedrich, also known as Woman before the Rising Sun, is possibly the artist's wife Caroline Brommer. Friedrich makes use of Rückenfigur (a rear-facing figure that is not the primary subject), allowing the viewer to place themselves into the scene. It is interpreted as an emblem of life's transience and individual salvation. The woman is silhouetted against a reddish-yellow sunset radiating from the distant mountains, arms outstretched.
- All sizes given are in inches (″), assembled within a ¼″ tolerance.
- Stretched canvases are assembled within a ¼″ tolerance, ex. an 8x12″ canvas's final dimensions will be ~8x12″, on 1.5″ deep stretcher bars.
- Framed canvases are ~2″ larger, ex. an 8x12″ canvas's final framed dimensions will be ~10x14″ overall.
- Float frames are ⅝″ wide viewed from the front, and 1⅞″ deep; with a visible gap ("float") between the frame and canvas of ~¼″.
