About Ghost Rising from a Swamp
Onoe Baiko as a Female Ghost Rising from a Swamp (1838) by Utagawa Kunisada depicts the kabuki actor Onoe Baiko, renowned for his skill at portraying ghosts. The character may be the ghost of the wife of Kohada Koheiji in the play Eiri otogi zoshi. Koheiji was murdered in a swamp by his wife's lover, returning in death to kill his wife and murderer. The female ghost here is clutching a baby, and rises from the swamp in the rain, next to a spectral flame.
