About Old Man with Turban
Bust of an Old Man with Turban (1628) by Rembrandt van Rijn depicts an unnamed man in a decorative turban, making it a "tronie" or character study not intended to depict a specific person. Pictures of imaginary Persian or Ottoman princes were popular at the time, in part due to new trade contacts with the Middle East that brought international visitors to Amsterdam. The true identity of the man, a Dutchman who often posed for Rembrandt and other artists, remains a mystery.
