Ship in the Storm

Ship in the Storm (1899, Navire dans la Tempête) by Henri Rousseau appears to be based on a combination of different ships, featuring portholes like an ocean liner, and a cutwater like a battleship. Rough gray waves and darkened sky contrast with the blue, white and red of the boat, with no effect of depth. It has similarities to the D’Encastreux cruiser, launched to sea by the French Navy in 1896. Another influence may be the passenger ships of Théophile Poilpot's 1889 panorama for Compagnie Transatlantique.
