About Soir Bleu
Soir Bleu (1914) by Edward Hopper was painted in Paris, and titled in French (Blue Evening). It depicts an assortment of people gathered on a terrace, sitting around small tables with Chinese lanterns overhead. On the far left, a man smokes a cigarette; in the center, another smoker and a military officer share a table with a clown in bright white costume; a heavily made-up woman stands behind them; and on the far right sit a couple in fancy dress. Typical of Hopper, a melancholy mood hangs over the scene of people sharing a space but barely interacting.
