About Storm on the Sea of Galilee
Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee (1633) by Rembrandt van Rijn is among the largest and earliest of his works, and his only seascape. It represents the biblical event in which Jesus calmed the storm on the Sea of Galilee, as described in the fourth chapter of the Gospel of Mark. It depicts Christ's disciples struggling against a heavy storm as a huge wave tosses the boat and rips the sail. Christ, depicted on the right, remains calm. One disciple is seen vomiting over the side, another is looking directly at the viewer (a self-portrait of the artist). The painting was displayed at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston before being stolen in 1990. It remains missing.
