The Allegory of Faith ☷ Vermeer ☰ Art Print
The Allegory of Faith (1672) by Johannes Vermeer, also known as Allegory of the Catholic Faith, is rich in symbolism, sharing several elements with The Art of Painting, both differing greatly in style and purpose from his other works that depict everyday scenes. Allegory depicts a woman in a white and blue satin dress with gold trim, her right foot on a terrestrial globe and her right hand on her heart, as she looks up at a glass sphere hanging from the ceiling by a blue ribbon. Her left arm rests on a table with a golden chalice, and a large book, on top of which is a crown of thorns. On the far wall is a large painting of Christ's crucifixion. At the bottom of the scene is an apple, and a bleeding snake which has been crushed. Vermeer's iconography is taken mainly from Cesare Ripa's Iconologia (1613), an emblem book of allegorical illustrations with accompanying morals. Ripa states that Faith is the most important of the virtues.

Art prints are created from a giclée print on archival heavyweight paper that can be mounted in a frame. Different paper finishes allow you to customize the appearance: smooth paper maintains detail and color; textured paper slightly softens color with a traditional paper finish; and resin coated paper slightly deepens color adding a semi-gloss finish. Framed prints do not come with protective glass / glazing, to showcase the paper and reduce light reflection (it is available upon request).
