About The Falling Rocket
Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket (1877) by James McNeill Whistler depicts a fireworks display in the foggy night sky, inspired by Cremorne Gardens, a celebrated resort in Chelsea, London. John Ruskin, a leading art critic of the Victorian era, described it as "flinging a pot of paint in the public's face." This review put Whistler and his other works in disrepute, and he sued Ruskin for libel. The trial was disastrous, Whistler won only a farthing, and declared bankruptcy due to the court costs adding to his other debts. Whistler retreated to Venice, which led to an exceptionally productive period for him, creating over fifty etchings, several nocturnes, some watercolors, and over 100 pastels which sold particularly well in London.
