About The Large Tree
The Large Tree (1891, Le Grand Arbre) by Paul Gauguin depicts a tropical scene of four women in the shade of a large tree while a fifth woman rests in the doorway of a thatched-roof hut in the background. The words "Te raau rahi" (Tahitian for "The Big Tree") appear in the lower left under the tree. The painting was one of his first created in Tahiti, where he had gone to escape the materialism of European society, abandoning his family and career as a stockbroker. The rich colors and stylized figures were intended to be both symbolic and mysterious. "I obtain symphonies," he wrote, "harmonies that represent nothing real in the absolute sense of the word."
