The Loss of Virginity

Paul Gauguin (1891)

The Loss of Virginity (The Awakening of Spring) (1891, La Perte de Virginité, le Réveil du Printemps) by Paul Gauguin symbolically depicts a young woman's loss of virginity. The woman is laying naked in a Breton field overlooking the ocean, plucked flower in her hand, embracing a fox, while a wedding party approaches from the distance. Gauguin's last major work produced before he went to Tahiti, the model was his 20 year old mistress, Juliette Huet, who was pregnant with his child when he left in search of the "savage and primitive."
